Building stronger community relationships in 2022

At Tarmac, we want our business to be seen as a positive addition to the areas in which we operate. One way of achieving this is through our people volunteering to support local community groups and activities. In 2022, Tarmac employees completed 4,585 volunteering hours.
In 2022, employees from Tarmac sites across the Yorkshire Dales took part in four volunteering events with Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT), completing 483 volunteering hours between them. These events included tree planting, woodland maintenance, and the removal of 3,000 plastic tree guards for recycling as part of YDMT’s Plastic Free Woodland’s project. At one of these events, the volunteers undertook general site maintenance at Swinesett Hill, a new woodland located in Gayle, just outside Hawes, and near the iconic Pennine Way.
The day was spent surveying young trees, helping the landowner prepare for any replanting required in the winter. This involved marking trees that had not survived, straightening tree guards and weeding, where required, to help the young woodland to flourish.
Tarmac is celebrating entering its fourth year of a ten-year partnership with Clapham-based Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, which will see the education and development of 2,500 people from disadvantaged backgrounds and the completion of a staggering 7,700 hours of volunteering.
Sarah Hodgson, development manager at YDMT, said: “It was good to welcome Tarmac and its volunteers out to Swinesett Hill. They were a fantastic group to work with and got a lot of work done. It’s great to be able to get willing volunteers out into the Dales with us and carry out some vital woodland maintenance work to help young trees thrive.”
In 2022, Tarmac also held four open days at our Mountsorrel Quarry and had over 3,000 local people attend to learn more about the site’s operations and our role as a sustainable business. Participants enjoyed a full tour, and learnt about how we extract and process materials, while also getting to see the site’s brand new primary crusher.
The day was a great success, and guests were particularly impressed with the quarry after seeing its size, scale and depth from the viewing platform. Days like these are an important part of our community engagement programme, to help local communities better understand what we do, why it’s important and how we work to protect the environment.
